Scum of the Earth
So last night we went to this awesome church...Scum of the Earth. Pretty much just your average church. Except way different. Amid the atmosphere of worship and humility, I forgot that I didn't know anybody, and it really didn't matter that the place smelled ripe from homeless people and smokers. And I love that they serve a meal before the service! It's so perfect for fellowship and drawing people in from the streets! Not that I have anything against our suburban church; it's just that Scum was really spiritually refreshing.
Also, God touched and encouraged me last night with a couple living reminders of what pure, selfless devotion looks like. It's so beautiful. And it's only possible when I see Jesus for who He really is.
To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world. (1 Corinthians 4:11-13)
